City Purchases Clearwater Christian College Property for Purposes of Environmental Preservation

city-of-clearwaterThe city of Clearwater recently purchased the property formerly belonging to Clearwater Christian College. The acquisition includes all college-owned property northeast of the intersection of Gulf-to-Bay and Bayshore boulevards, with exception of the college campus, which will remain under college ownership.

The city’s goal is to preserve the land for environmental posterity. The acquired property includes approximately six acres of uplands along the east side of Bayshore Boulevard and 80 acres of wetlands located between Bayshore Boulevard and the college-campus island.

The property will be managed by the Engineering Department. With this acquisition, the city will develop a master plan for the property in order to identify environmental restoration and water quality improvement projects.

“This purchase emphasizes the city’s commitment to Clearwater’s environmental future,” said Mayor George Cretekos. “Residents can now look forward to being able to enjoy this land as a natural preserve with improved bay water quality for years to come.”
